Transwarp in Star Trek XI
Does anyone think it's possible that Starfleet is using an experimental form of transwarp drive or some sort of hybrid technology? Ie, the warp methods in this movie were very surreal as far as normal warp drive effects go. Given that the Romulans are apparently using ships that are heavily enhanced with borg stolen technology, would that suggest that it's possible that the Narada and the alt 23rd century ships were using some sort of transwarp or slipstream drive?

I think Abrams just wanted warp drive to look like hyperdrive from Star Wars. The whole stolen Borg technology is all non canon anyway.

Plus you now need a lever to start the jump to Warp, just like Hyperdrives... :)Sideswipe wrote:I think Abrams just wanted warp drive to look like hyperdrive from Star Wars. The whole stolen Borg technology is all non canon anyway.

Not the first time they had such a thing. In ST:TMP, a throttle/lever is used to increase the ship's speed at warp or impulse. You see it occasionally used in ST2 and 3, but after that it kind of disappeared.

Try cutting and pasting this link from Trekcore:

If that doesn't work, try this link to the thumbnail's page:

The shot of Sulu nudging the lever forward is in the bottom most row, far left.

Re: Transwarp in Star Trek XI
It would be interesting if they decided to give the new Trek transwarp or slipstream as without it they will really be doing nothing much but exploring/discovering the same stuff they did in TOS, TNG, DS9 for the first hundred years or so. The knowledge that original Spock brings with him would be immesurably useful and he seems to be willing to share it as he gave them advanced transporter tech already even though scotty was gonna invent it eventually anyway.
I wonder if the temporal prime directive applies in a alternate timeline?, the new timeline started when Nero came through so in essence anything Spock does in this new time line is technically the "first time" so he could hardly be considered to be changing the past in this time line.
Also any info he gives out from his original timeline is not from the new timelines future and if he did give out the info it would actually shape the new timelines future so would be part of the new timelines "true" history and time agents would likely defend/protect it.
Time travel makes my head hurt.

You've never seen "Wrath of 'Gahn", rite? Real buttons and levers make so much more sense than those silly touch screens. I HATE touch screens.

Mybe but this way consoles can be reprogrammed - what was before Science console now is Tactical or Environmental console etc.Mr. Oragahn wrote:You've never seen "Wrath of 'Gahn", rite? Real buttons and levers make so much more sense than those silly touch screens. I HATE touch screens.

I agree, I much prefer the touch screens for their versatility...Picard wrote:Mybe but this way consoles can be reprogrammed - what was before Science console now is Tactical or Environmental console etc.Mr. Oragahn wrote:You've never seen "Wrath of 'Gahn", rite? How about both? Touch screens, manual buttons and levers, which is what the new Trek seems to have anyway. It's also what we see in real-life modern airplane and crew spaceship cockpits as well.
