Captain's Log?

Is what is shown in a Star Trek episode just the captain writing in his log, and would that explain at least some of the oddities in Star Trek when it comes to special effects?

No, because we often see things happening that the Captain isn't even aware of, so if what we saw were only people's logs, we wouldn't see them...

The log is just a way to convey plot points in a brief fashion.

That's not conclusive because other officers had to report to Picard. Insofar, he could have included in his log things his officers have told him. He even could have included assumptions, speculations or extra- or interpolations of what could have happened, where neither he nor someone who would tell him what has happened was.

P.S.: That's my 1.000th post on this board.

I've always been under the impression that we are seeing some sort of official report that Starfleet gets. The report wouldn't just be the captain's, and would contain sensor data. I guess my mistake was simply calling it the captain's log.

It's the best way I can explain the FX screw ups that make no sense given known capabilities.

W.I.L.G.A. and Lucky, we can't being seeing logs or reports, because we sometimes see events after the "main story" has finished that happens outside of the heroes' knowledge...

Can you give examples?

In Nemesis, the plotting of Shinzon and the Reman was done out of earshot, sensor shot, or presence of any federation personal, or on Shinzon's ship, when he reacts to the E-E's efforts, there's no way for anyone who wasn't there to know that...

Yeah, but unlike the episodes of the series, that movie does not start with » Captain's log, stardate [...] «

Actually, an even better example is "Balance of Terror" where we the audiance see the Romulan ship's crew's point of view of what is going in a way that would be impossible for Kirk or anyone else on the Enterprise to do so.

And there are many more examples of such instances throughout the series, whether it's Voyager, TNG, DS9, TOS or ENT...

Yes, but unlike WILGA's objection to Nemesis, the BoT example pretty much clinches it since the two short transmissions from the warbird couldn't possibly have covered all the conversations we saw on board it between the commander and his crew.

Clearly they are using advanced AI, spies, and time travel to fill in the blanks after the fact.
