Photon Torpedos have guidance systems and shields

It has taken forty years of my life to develop the programming that will control your photon torpedoes. It has been my life. Thank you for this opportunity. My only wish has been to find a way to revive our sun before I die.

(A little later)

LAFORGE: Torpedoes now entering the stellar core.

TIMICIN: Their shields are holding. Guidance systems normal.

LAFORGE: Ignition sequence, six seconds
Pretty self explanatory.

The Effects of a Photon Torpedo detonating
New Ground 5X10 wrote:WORF: Deflector strength is down to twelve percent. There are fluctuations in several warp transfer conduits. Tractor beams and transporters offline.

RIKER: We have some gaps in the aft shields, Captain. When the torpedoes explode, these areas will be contaminated with ion radiation. We need to evacuate sections twenty four to forty seven, decks thirty five through thirty eight.
What is Ion Radiation?

Information about the warhead
Good Shepherd 6X20 wrote:JANEWAY: I'm firing a photon torpedo. There's enough antimatter in the detonation chamber to draw that proto-comet, if that's what it is.
The Loss 4X10 wrote:WORF: Launching torpedoes. Detonation in five seconds. Three, two, one.

DATA: Matter-antimatter explosions appear to be ineffective, sir.
Photon Torpedo warheads contain matter and antimatter.

Information on Torpedo Casings
Pen Pals 2X15 wrote:WORF: We're modifying class one probes so they become resonators. We will then use torpedo casings to protect them once they begin burrowing beneath the surface.
Photon Torpedo casings are tough little buggers.

Photon Torpedos Blast
The Quality of Life 8X09 wrote:FARALLON: We'd have to configure the torpedo very carefully. The shape of the shock wave would be critical. But it could work.

RIKER: How long would it take to set that up?

DATA: I estimate that it would take a minimum of sixty five minutes to properly configure the torpedo.
Photon Torpedo shields can be modulated in order to ignore the target's shields
Equinox Part Two 6X01 wrote:E-EMH [OC]: Doctor to Equinox. I've got their shield frequency.

E-EMH: I'm transmitting it to you now.

BURKE [OC]: They'll try to remodulate. Keep monitoring.

E-EMH: Aye sir.

[Bridge]

TORRES: They've slowed to one quarter impulse.

JANEWAY: Prepare a tractor beam.

TUVOK: They are launching another torpedo.

JANEWAY: Full power to the forward shields.

KIM: Hull breach on deck four!

TORRES: How'd they get through our shields?

JANEWAY: Hard about! Get us out of range. Remodulate the shields.

Photon Torpedo Settings
New Ground 5X10 wrote:RIKER: Red Alert. Load torpedo bays. Set warhead yields to level sixteen.
They have at least 16.

Photon Torpedo Firepower
Q Who? 2X16 wrote:DATA: Without our shields, at this range there is a high degree of probability that a photon detonation could destroy the Enterprise.

RIKER: Prepare to fire.
Apocalypse Rising 5X01 wrote:DAMAR: Personally, I think we'd be better off launching an orbital assault on Gowron's command centre. A full spread of photon torpedoes would take care of him, the Klingon High Command and everyone else within a few hundred kilometres.

ODO: You should ask Dukat for some shore leave. I think you've been in space too long.

DAMAR: Why? Because I'm willing to spill a little Klingon blood to get the job done?
Minimum Safe Range
The Die Is Cast 3X21 wrote:SISKO: Attack pattern omega four. Full impulse power. Hold your fire until we're within five hundred metres.

KIRA: We might get pretty singed at that range.
This is the minimum safe range for all weapons.

Did i miss anything?

As for guidance systems there's this from DS9's "Valiant":

FARRIS: A single torpedo rigged with a radiogenic warhead could reduce those braces to the consistency of wet pasta.

WATTERS: And as a result, the entire antimatter storage system would tear itself apart. Commander Nog, you don't seem convinced.

NOG: Well, sir, in order to rig a torpedo to yield a delta radiation burst I'll have to remove most of the guidance systems. We'll have to target it manually.

Torpedoes can be guided manually, if need be. Though in this case, this may apply to quantum torpedoes since even though the type of torpedo is not specified here, they are shown glowing blue, which in the TNG-era usually means quantum torpedo.

Lucky wrote:Minimum Safe Range
That's for the Defiant's phasers, if anything, and the fact that the ship was under constant attack by Jem'Hadar warships. There is also the minimum torpedo-related ranges in "Q Who" and "The Nth Degree":

"Q Who?" [TNG, season 2]

WORF: The Borg ship is re-establishing its tractor beam.

RIKER: Lock on photon torpedoes.

WORF: Yes, sir.

DATA: Without our shields, at this range there is a high degree of probability that a photon detonation could destroy the Enterprise.

The E-D visually is shown to be within a few kilometers at most from the Borg cube, and without shields the ship will likely be destroyed.

"The Nth Degree" [TNG, season 4]

WORF: The probe is following.

PICARD: Options, Number One?

RIKER: We can't use photon torpedoes. An explosion this close could cripple us.

WORF: Sir, recommend full phasers.

PICARD: Proceed.

Visually the probe appears to be within a kilometer of the E-D. It should be noted that when the E-D does fire, the order is for "Photon torpedoes. Maximum yield, full spread", indicating that just firing one or two torpedoes would probably not cause severe damage, but four or more of the maximum number and highest yield setting would definitely cripple or destroy the ship. So the E-D with full shields up will likely be crippled at close range by that.

Voyager also had examples of the torpedo guidance system in action. I simply went with the earliest example I could think of, and I thought one was enough.

Dam, that is a nasty anti-biological weapon they are talking about. I thought those things were illegal?

[/quote]I actually decided not to include those examples do to be dependent on visuals, and the fact they imply a ship exploding in your face is less dangerous then a single tiny torpedo.

I will take clearly stated dialog over visuals any day no matter the setting, and in Star Trek there is actually a number of in universe reasons to not trust what you see with your eyes to be accurate.
