It is commonly stated that warp is speed of plot within each episode, and there is the stupid cult of Conni idiots. So, how much time does the Enterprise-D have to get where it needs to go?

35 to 42 days at Earth
The Enterprise-D is in dry dock do to battle damage from the Borg. The ship was expected to be in dry dock for 5 to 6 weeks.

2 to 3 days easily at Orgus Two
They cut a two day liberty on Ogus 2 short do to a practical joke gone wrong forces the Enterprise-D take a two day trip to Star Base 416 for life saving medical treatment, but Data receives a message from his dad on the way to Star Base 416, and reroughted the ship to his father's location.

The Enterprise-D answers a distress call, and finds an anomalous human among the survivors.

Wesley traps his mother in a warp bubble, and they have to return to the location the experiment was done to save Dr. Crusher.

The Enterprise-D has traveled to a planet over 2,000 light years from Earth that is reading to test its first warp drive. As part of first Contact Riker is disguised as a native in order to better learn about the culture, but is hurt, and is found out to be an alien when taken to a hospital.

Baby space-born life form thinks the Enterprise-D is its mom. The Enterprise-D tries to get rid of it without hurting it.

Well, making it useful for speed requires adding the factor of distance, and that becomes tricky. I tried doing this with stardates.

It's pretty hard to nail down locations for a lot of Trek episodes. Some of them mention real star names, and those are easy enough, but the ones that just toss out things about the border or frontier are a lot harder. We don't have a guarantee that the Federation is shaped like a continuous blob, or that Earth is at the center; in fact, a number of things in ENT and the new Trek movies suggest that the Klingon homeworld is pretty close to Earth, so the Federation is probably fairly lopsided.

Except for this line from ST:TUC:

KIRK: One of the advantages of being a thousand light years from Federation headquarters.

Assuming Federation headquarters is located on Earth, it fits in extremely well with the "Conspiracy" and "In the Hands of the Prophets" map showing that the Klingon Empire is hundreds to over a thousand light years from Earth. The speeds are all consistent then with those from TOS episodes, like "Obsession" and "That Which Survives" where the ship can traverse about a 1,000 LY in a single day.

So are those speeds available due to some super up to date mapping and eventually the constant clearing of the path by ships solely built for that, or is it due to the massive use of warp in a region that keeps digging a deeper and deeper ravine in subspace?

The only thing that remotely fits that description that is talked about is the "Hekaras Corridor", but that seems to be a strange one of a kind spacial anomaly and natural. What ever was causing the damage in the "Hekaras Corridor" seems to have been fixed rather quickly.

I'd assume some areas are just more conducive to warp travel for a number reasons. A simple mundane nebula would likely be harder to travel through at warp then empty space after all.

It is rather interesting that the last three digits of a stardates given in the same episode seem to be internally consistent. You can actually use them to count how many days go by within an episode

Look at "Night Terrors"

Captain's log, Stardate 44631.2. We are proceeding through the rim of an uncharted binary star system, where we may have located the USS Brittain. The missing science vessel failed to arrive at its destination and has not been heard from since a distress call twenty nine days ago.


Captain's log, stardate 44635.8. Four days have passed, but we have made little progress in solving the mystery of the Brittain. I have decided we should return to Starbase two twenty, and to that end, Commander La Forge is rigging the Brittain for towing.

Captain's log, stardate 44639.9. The Enterprise has now been adrift for a total of ten days. We have sent subspace distress calls, but because of our distant location, we cannot expect a response for at least another two weeks.

Acting Captain's log, stardate 44642.1. I have assumed command of the Enterprise at the request of Captain Picard. Our situation is deteriorating. Many of the crew are unable to function and our life support systems are beginning to falter.

Deep Space nine 01X01
BASHIR: This'll be perfect. Real frontier medicine.

The Klingon and Romulan borders are very near Earth(relatively speaking) and the other founding Federation member's home worlds and colonies making it difficult if not impossible for the Federation to expand into the beta quadrant, and that would place the Cardassian border a good distance from anywhere the NX-01 was exploring as that area was well explored and colonized before Earth even had a warp drive. That means the Enterprise-D had to cross hundreds if not thousands of light years in less then a year.
