Jean'Luc, I don't have to tell you, The Federation is not prepared for a new sustained conflict.
The conclusion of the Cardassian conflict is often used to paint the United Federation of Planets as a group of peace at any cost spineless "hippies", but the episode "The Wounded" seems as if it may indicate that the UFP is at that time at war with several local powers.
Do you think that the UFP ended the Cardassian war to focus on other wars against more dangerous powers?
If the UFP is at war then who are they at war with?
Wars on multiple fronts?

That comment could just as easily mean they had focused on being a bunch of peaceful space hippies after the Cardassian conflict just as much as it could mean they were fighting other enemies if not more.Lucky wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwnD4vegnAQ&NR=1

Considering the series was based on the flagship of the federation and most powerful ship in the fleet at that time it would have certainly been involved.

Re: Wars on multiple fronts?
we saw what a UFP level power did (and considering how badly the klingons suffered trying to retake DS9 not fully on it's level not to mention Gowrons own comments regarding how dangerous fed industry was) to the cardassians and it was a brutal brutal ass kicking that had the head government running away abandoning the capital and only really having a chance to actually mount a defense when the klingons had to divert the bulk of their forces to fighting the feds
theres no reason to assume the feds had they not been sufficiently blood lusted could not of done similar or worse had they not been either distracted by other matters (Romulans Sheliak and what ever else) or unwilling to fight a war when the disparity is so severe and considering how the Cardassians ended up any ways its pretty obvious how it would go
IIRC didn't the wounded and chain of command occur after the wolf 359 bit?

Yes. Wolf 359 occurs in "The Best of Both Worlds," season 3 ender/4 beginner. "The Wounded" is later in season 4. "Chain of Command" is all the way in season six.Admiral Breetai wrote:IRC didn't the wounded and chain of command occur after the wolf 359 bit?
Anyway, one possible candidate for another power being fought at the time is the Tzenkethi, who were a major plot point in DS9 "The Adversary." The Founders hope to start a war between the Federation and the Tzenkethi in the hopes of damaging the Federation, so it stands to reason they would choose an enemy of sufficient strength and technological advancement.

Yep, it's possible that the Federation, who was expanding into the Alpha Quadrant in the 24th century (as opposed to the Beta Quadrant, which I suspect is what brought them into conflict with the Klingons and the Romulans impart), so them having a minor war with the Tzekethi is possible--though I'm not sure entirely true given that I would have thought we would have heard something about it.Cocytus wrote:Yes. Ah well.
In any case though, I think she was mainly referencing the Borg. Remember that the Borg popped in about a year and a half after their initial encounter in the Delta Quadrant. Starfleet was probably trying to gather as many ships to protect Earth and the systems where the Borg were known to have visited (such as the Romulan-UFP Neutral Zone).
All in all though, we can't be sure.
EDIT:
Actually, reading through the quote again, she isn't suggesting that they're already in a conflict. Given the context of a former war with the Cardassians, she is simply saying that the Federation is not ready to enter into another extended conflict with the Cardassian Empire.
Now, it may be that they're fighting wars on multiple fronts, but the quote doesn't at all suggest that. It could be from both the Tzekethi and the Borg or it may have just been the Borg. There is no way to know.

I don't see anything that shows a lack of will to fight. What I see is a lack of resources/ships at the moment.Kor_Dahar_Master wrote:That comment could just as easily mean they had focused on being a bunch of peaceful space hippies after the Cardassian conflict just as much as it could mean they were fighting other enemies if not more.Lucky wrote:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SwnD4vegnAQ&NR=1

The Romulans are acting up, the Borg just ripped the UFP a new one, and then there are groups like the Breen who aren't all that friendly.
