Do you think it should be canon?

Yay, it's a good addition. It's got lots of good stuff for the debate.

Yay, any new canon Trek is good, regardless of its usefulness to the debate.

Nay, TAS is lame all on its own.

Nay, the animated visuals are almost impossible to get reliable info for the debate.

First TAS canonicty? What do you think?

Post by GStone » Sun Dec 17, 2006 5:28 pm

I've recently heard that the first animated adventures of the Enterprise, with Kirk and Spock and them, could be thought of as canon, at least according to an interview with someone in the DVD set. A review at Amazon.com mentions DC Fontana, but I don't think she's been with the show for a while (since early DS9 season 1-"Dax"). I know she's involved with the noncanon recently.

But, let's say that wherever the mention that the TAS is canon, it is by someone that is actually in a position to say what is canon and what isn't. What do you guys think of the TOS era TAS being canon, yay or nay?

While animated series are clearly right out for "videographic" style analysis, I'd say it's OK otherwise. And frankly, mostly fits in with TOS. It won't make much of a difference to include TAS.

Well, the idea of TAS canonicity has some interesting potential elements. I recall an interesting scene of Spock warding off restless natives by digging a gigantinormous moat with his Phaser Two in like one-sixth of a second or something ridiculous like that. And I seem to recall a ceiling-mounted phaser defense unit for the bridge that was kinda cool.

However, I'm willing to lose that if it means we don't have to consider Dr. Biggus Kinicklius or whatever that freaky giant dude was called, or indeed the entire episode's concept of cloning leading to mega-uber-gigantism.

It's just wrong.

TAS was a fun little kid's show, but I think it would cheapen the rest of Trek if all the little silly parts had to be canon. I think the best elements of TAS have already been ganked from it and used elsewhere ("Tiberius", Spock backstory, phaser doodads in "Civil Defense"[DS9], Vulcan stuff in Pathways and ENT, et cetera).

But opinions may differ, and that's cool. In this new Trek interregnum, with all the confusion and corporate shenanigans of Trek's dual ownership, one's personal canon means a whole lot more than it used to. Whatever your choice, make it a fun one. :)
