Gravity manipulation / momentum

Post by Roondar » Sun Mar 23, 2008 1:00 pm

Just some weird things that occurred to me.

Suppose you have a device which can 'project' gravity somewhere, like a lens of some sort.

Could you then use that device to pull yourself forward?

My guess is that you could, I'm also assuming that if you then shut of said device your ship will still move in whatever direction it was moving earlier.

How about inertial dampening (like all Sci-Fi more or less has to have, they all show acceleration capabilities beyond what a human can take from time to time). Would that be possible by projecting gravity (like say we project a gravity field to nullify/lessen the momentum of a person)?

Or is that a whole different thing altogether?

Is there in fact a reasonable (as in physically sound) way to dampen momentum at all? Or is that just 'magic'?
