It's not as though Janeway was completely holding back as she unloaded several torpedoes point-blank on a Kazon Predator, and took it out. So it may be a bit more complex than her not wanting waste the torpedoes, but get the most out of them since at millions of kilometers, the effectiveness might fall off dramatically (more reactant to for the warhead at close range than for long range, plus accuracy issues in pinpointing specific targets on the enemy ships).

At that range, while some torpedoes may hit, they wouldn't be as effective, and so Janeway didn't want to use them in what she felt was a "wasteful" way...

you know Kor you could of brought up Scarface from concrete jungle or the Ancient predators from the comic books and novels since they're canon..and they basically start at spiderman level..and get more and more over powered

Not to say that the predators in most cases had been reduced to fight the strongest opponents with minimal weapons, and also in some cases while falling into a trap.

Also the term competence is interesting here because the preds do it for sport. If they wanted to kill truly competently, I don't think they would for example unleash some kind of fiends against armed preys. Plus those Preds were there for the kill, and only the kill. They barely picked any trophy.
The Pred in AVPR was totally unmatched and tried to handle an entire xeno infestation that grew at typical AVP rates.
The xenomorphs in the pyramid also were at their advantage, plus Scar had to toss his wristcomp to get rid of the growing nest.

Ancient predators the ones around a thousand years old appear very rarely in the comics due well surviving that life style long enough to reach grumpy old man status is insanely rare and they usually chill on a mountain of accomplishments but when they do show up it's to track Rogue preds who break the rules (hunting blooded humans for example or hunting other preds) who are usually hardcore criminals by pred standards

you get a very quick idea about how utterly lethal a predator can be when he's out to do a job and not hunt for sport...and I'll put it to you this way Boba's not surviving that his dad aint..Mace wouldn't even walk away from that

all humor aside that thing absorbed two fully loaded shot gun blasts to the gut a missing arm then being smashed through a wall then being disemboweled before going down..tell me who fett faced that was that tough?

also as far as other film preds go even, one of them scar or broke tusk physically dead lifted a Xeno and hurled him through a solid rock wall and was grappling with the guy like it was nothing. reacting fast enough to cut a face hugger in half and snap a baby Xenos neck

we've disagreed on comic based topics before and some that are pretty hot button and he's never flipped it aggressively on me before it must because of the stigma surrounding pro trek debaters there kinda messed up I don't know if he's very fierce but I have seen him loose it on people usually trolls who deserve it though
