No offense, but I'm not terribly interested in wanking up that which is already wanked. However, that being said, I think the superlaser should be used as the nose of a giant face painted on the Death Star like the iconic Smiley Face. Now you can be cheerful and positive while terrorizing the enemies of the Empire!

That is what makes it a poor foundation for a story, you cannot invent a flawless indestructable perfect thing and expect to make a interesting story around it.

You may has well of invented a big red button with the words "I-WIN" on it and then write a story that involves you pressing it everytime anything at all threatens you.

Trouble is, shields would need to leave a hole when the core produces energy and needs to vent some out. You better come with a very well tuned system that precisely shuts the shield the moment the exhaust is out. Or, you actually build your exhaust shaft as a magnetic accelerator, so any solid warhead or bolt made of matter will be pushed back, while the exhaust will be accelerated out. You can leave that on all the time. I believe tens of kilometers of a force field pushing you forward (or more precisely upward) would take care of any penetrating projectile.

So you have a flaw that is totally unexploitable, given the almost miraculous destruction of the first Death Star?
