Well, sole difference is that I don't call people idiots if I can evade it. They do, and that on regular basis. And my calculations my seem unreasonable, but are at least based on canon, if somewhat loosely.

Don't use "approximate" canon, use the shows and the movies, and use the same things for SW, the show and the movies, because they are higher canon.
And if someone brings in the ICS, then bring in "Darksaber" which shows the contrary...

But stay polite...

With the single difference that in Trek there doesn't seem to be a higher canon, there's just canon. Only SW's property company seems to endorse two policies and clown around with them.

And that's where the confusion for most people comes from. In Trek it's farily straight-forward: if it isn't one of the live-action movies or TV episodes, it isn't canon, with only a couple of exceptions, such as the TAS episode "Yesteryear". No hierarchy, no newer material abrogates the older.

Star Wars canon tries to make everyone happy by saying all of it is canon. But you see there's this hierarchy, with the movies on the very top of the pyramid, and everything below it, and so long as nothing contradicts the movies, it's all good, with some notable exceptions. This has naturally lead to vast amounts of confusion with people arging what exactly constitutes G-level canon and C-level canon, and so on. To make matters worse, George Lucas himself has said in interview after interview that what happens in the Expanded Universe material is in a seperate, parallel universe, and they aren't the same thing at all, much less canon.

So not only are people now very confused, they're unhappy, and other certain people use this confusion to their benefit in the Versus debates to make all sorts of way out there claims.

And ironically, all this came about because of people complaining that they didn't know what was and wasn't canon.

Great Success!

Arguably, it above all started with Mr. George "make me books that make money but know that those books mean shit to me" Lucas.

I suppose you could go that route. Though at the time, I doubt one could forsee the nuttery that would arise with the Internet. Can you imagine a bunch of nerds getting together in a library or their moms basement to debate SW VS ST?

Hardly necessary since there were plenty of sci-fi cons back then that one could go to and do that at. ;-)

Careful with what you say. It almost sounds like you're implying the Flanneled One didn't foresee such a thing to happen. Mmm... perhaps we could do something about that displeasing lack of faith.

Ugh, I'm still trying to wash off the filth from the one I went to in the 90's.

Vancouver, it was full of fat fucks in Klingon armour and smelly ones without it. Shatner and Nimoy were there but just for a Q&A type thing. Most of the stuff was just signed photos and things.
