Star Wars What If: Vader Survives

Post by Dartan » Thu Aug 16, 2007 4:08 pm

Darth Vader, aka Anakin Skywalker survives his encounter with the Emperor on DSII. Luke evacuates him on board the shuttle and takes him to the Rebel medical staff, who manage to stabilize him. What happens next? How does the Rebell Alliance to Restore the Republic deal with him? How does this effect the 'after movie' EU?

I think he would be accused and convicted. If the Republic has the death penalty, I'm sure he would get it. Otherwise he would get a life sentence.

I think they'd be pooched, the only person they have that's remotely capable of dealing with a functional Vader is Luke. And being on the Medical Frigate it would be hard to bring large numbers of troops to bear on him.

*Edit: he'd probably be able to escape.*

Except that you are not considering that a restored Anakin Skywalker would want to escape at all. More than likely in guilt over the horrendous crimes he has committed, Anakin would willingly face trial and punishment.

Better that they let him go and he can reform the Empire from the inside. Making continued conflict between the Empire and the Rebels unnecessary.

Have you read "Return of the Jedi: Infinities"? Something like that happened there :)

At the end, Vader joined Luke, decked in all-white armor :)

I read a similar fanfiction once. He joined the Rebels in all white armour but with an open mask. Don't remember much of it but it was obviously based on the story you mention.

In the movies/EU parallel universe continuity, that would be true. However in the stand-alone George Lucas canon, that would be a moot thing as the Empire apparently completely collapsed not long after the Battle of Endor, and likely Anakin would have to face the music (want to be tried), so to speak, for his crimes.

My guess would be that he'd go into exile or quiet himself in some section of some jedi related place to return to his studies. Luke and Leia keep his real identity a secret from the other rebels and the republic, except maybe Han, who has problems with him being around, since he was tortured and shoved into carbonoite. Anakin would want to make it up to Han, if Han wanted, but Han is beside himself. I don't see Leia having any real heartfelt feelings for Anakin, as a father. So, she's more on Han's side. Luke asks Han not to tell people who Anakin was and Han storms off, Leia trailing behind. She hates Anakin for what he's done, but she still loves her twin. She hopes Luke will be okay on the path he's chosen, but she's can't be around him, while Anakin is there. Luke and Anakin start to rebuild the Jedi with Ben, Yoda and Qui-Gon, if he's still around. The 5 of them make up the new jedi council. They go public, but Anakin chooses a new name to reflect his change in life of late and they say Anakin was one of the jedi that hid from the jedi cullings, waiting for the jedi and the republic to be rebuilt again. Han sees the news report and Leia's beside him. Their relationship is strained because he has found out who her father was, but she reassures him that she couldn't control who her father was. But, he knows who she is and they start to get their relationship back on track. In getting the jedi rebuilt, the council returns to the old ways of their philosophy with some of their 'living force' views thrown in. Qui-Gon and Ben are the living force side of the council, Yoda and Luke are the spiritual force end. Anakin is a combo of both the spiritual and living sides of the force. He was very good at the living force side of things, but his new studies since surviving DS2 focus on supplimenting what he already knows with the spiritual side he neglected in his lust for power. While the jedi are being rebuilt, he hasn't made a decision which way he's gonna go just yet, towards the living force or the spiritual end.

I think it would be at least conceivable that Anakin would not hide who he was OR be tried and convicted by the Rebellion/New Republic. Isn't it possible that he would simply publicly renounce the Dark Side of the Force and make clear his intention to help rebuild the Republic? I'm not saying that public opinion toward him would change massively and he would be a hero of the people again or anything, obviously he would remain hugely controversial throughout the remainder of his life, but since Obi-Wan seemed to me to be trying to get Anakin to return to the Light on Mustafar so that he could be redeemed even AFTER he had killed so many at the temple, perhaps his fall to the Dark Side would be accepted by some as his real sin instead of all the things he did afterward. I was sort of under the impression that crimes committed while under the influence of the Dark Side were considered differently from those committed under normal circumstances. Also, surely Luke and Leia could bring a huge amount of influence to bear on Anakin's behalf in the new government.
It just seems unlikely to me that Anakin would be willing, so soon after being redeemed, to basically run from his past actions and hide his identity in order to escape facing what he had done.

Well, to me, Vader going public as a good guy is like Genghis Khan going to eastern Europe and Asia after all he did and saying he was a good guy again. He'd be run out of the continent by hordes of people on horseback and pitchforks and lit torches.

I was under the impression that the public really had no idea who Vader was.
