Federation Computer Technology

Post by Youngla0450 » Sun Jul 04, 2010 7:08 pm

The Federation's computer technology is inferior to the computer technology of the Galactic Empire, or any Star Trek faction for that matter. Even Han Solo's Millenium Falcon's computer is more advanced then the Enterprise computer.

Here is a couple of examples, as well my arguments. Three will be posted now, three later:
TNG Season 1, Ep# 3: "The Naked Now"

RIKER: Captain, the ship's engines are cut off from the bridge. And I have the reason. The assistant chief engineer pulled out the isolinear optical chips from command and all engines are off-line.
This demostrates that the computer effectively operates the ship's engines. If the chips are pulled out, then the ship can go no-where. They have no back-up systems or independent controls, thus repersenting excessive centralization.
TNG Season 1, Ep# 19: "Coming of Age"

TASHA: Captain, there's an unauthorized entry in Main Shuttlebay.

REMMICK: "Unauthorized?"

PICARD: Who is it, Lieutenant?

TASHA: The computer reads the I.D. number of... Jake Kurland.

PICARD: Bridge to Main Shuttlebay. Mister Kurland... This is Captain Picard. Respond.

REMMICK: Isn't the area secured? I want answers.
The shuttlebay was off limits to certain people, including Jake Kurkland. If it is unauthorized, then why is a young boy allowed in? The computer should automatically deny his request since he is unauthorized.
[TNG Season 2, Ep# 29: "Elementary, Dear Data"

DATA: Computer. Execute a complete shutdown of the Holodeck.

(The holodeck doesn't shut down).

GEORDI: The program is still running. It didn't shut down.
/quote]

This indicates the computer's operating system design is poor, and when that the holodeck controls usually overload because the system is unstable.

In the "Coming of Age" episode example, you cleverly left out some important context about Mr. Kurland:

REMMICK: Very original, Captain. But how did that child acquire access to a shuttlecraft?

RIKER: Kurland is a highly qualified Enterprise Academy candidate, fully trained in many areas including shuttles.

REMMICK: And did this full training include discipline?

PICARD: Mister Remmick, young men sometimes make rash choices. Which is why Mister Kurland will receive a strong refresher specifically in discipline

REMMICK: I'll note that in my report.

PICARD: Full cooperation, Number One.

Kurland was specifically in the same acting ensigns program that Wesley was. He was upset that he was chosen for the course and had decided to run away rather than face his father with failure. And speaking of failures. What about the lack of computer security on the Seperatist flagship Invisible Hand as per RoTJ, that allowed some random astomech droid to hack into it's systems so two Jedi could run amok inside it? Where's the security lockout codes? Where's the firewalls and passwords. Even more embarassingly some 20 years later in ANH, the same astromech droid hacks into the main computer network of the vaunted Imperial superweapon, the Death Star, and provides full readouts of the station to a band of rebels on where to find the tractor beam systems' manual cut-offs, and the location of Princess Leia's cellblock? Later on the astromech was able to shutdown the garbage compactors across an entire level so that the rebels could escape, and no one noticed this unauthorized activity and put a stop to any of it! A few years later on Bespin's Cloud City, as seen in TESB, the same astromech again hacks into various computer networks to allow rebels to escape the city, and is instrumental in turning the Falcon's hyperdrive back on. Didn't the Empire know enough to put in some kind of pass-code or encryption in the the computers to prevent that?

Well you see R2-D2 knows Darth Vader is really Anakin Skywalker and thus easily deduced Vader's password, which would have override clearence on just about any imperial system, was Padme. So really unless Data uploads the two trilogies before hand the super advanced Imperial security system which we never saw but is really there trust us will effortlessly stop them. :)

TNG Season 2, Ep# 37: "Contagion"

GEORDI: Sensor recordings reveal that what we witnessed was an uncontrolled and catastrophic matter/antimatter mix. The magnetic seals between the chambers collapsed --

PICARD: That's not possible.

GEORDI: Yes, sir, it is, but a highly improbable series of events has to take place before such an occurrence can result.

PICARD: Explain.

GEORDI: In the event of a breach of seal integrity there is an emergency release system which dumps the antimatter.

DATA: Apparently such a dump began, was then halted, and the containment seals were dropped. There was still sufficient antimatter present to lead to the result we observed.

...

GEORDI: Sir, the Enterprise computer system is a lot like our bodies with a voluntary and involuntary system. Probably ninety percent of what happens on this ship is done automatically, completely beyond our control. We're sitting on a bomb that could go any second -- or never.
This demonstrates that all the safety systems on both Enterprise and Yamato are under central computer control. The computer also has control over the engines (as seen in "The Naked Times"). If the computer is infected by a virus, and controls the warp safety, then it can accidentally drop the safety seals and destroy the ship!

In addtion to the Seperatists having lapses in computer security with their flagship, and the Empire having awful security on the first Death Star, the second Death Star was hacked by droid assassin IG-88 during the Battle of Endor as recounted in "Therefore I Am: The Tale of IG-88". IG-88 had uploaded his consciousness into a computer core destined for DS2. He succeeded in being uploaded, and was preparing to activate his program to take over all droids in the galaxy when it was destroyed. In essence he had literally become the the DS2!

No one on the battlestation, except Palpatine had a clue that a foreign AI had been uploaded and was preparing to wreck havoc.

IG-88's plans were only put to a stop by the fortuitious timing of the Rebel Alliance's attack, which destroyed IG-88 along with the battlestation.

Mike, I am getting tired of you and your pro-Federation thoughts. Are you a fan of Star Trek or a fan of Star Wars?

That question is irrelavant to the search for the truth, your bias is showing.

Everybody knows that I have been presenting several sources, and yet you claim those sources cannot be used. I am appalled at how pro-Trek you are. You even refuse to even consider the fact that Star Trek has weaknesses. I admit the Galactic Empire and Star Wars in whole had several ill spots, but still Star Trek and the United Federation of Planets had so too.

I would remind you, one of those sources you took out of context, perhaps deliberately so. No one is saying the Federation does not mistakes or has potential weaknesses, far from it. But you should be prepared in turn to have similar weakenesses from the Empire or Old Republic held up for comparison by other people involved in this. That's what a real debate is all about.

Here are some mistakes of the Empire:

*The Imperial stormtroopers can be given hard beatings by certain Rebels or Ewoks, and they can stumble or make mistakes.

*The Empire's Star Destroyers are extremely large, and thus are less manuverable then the Voyager or even Enterprise-D.

*The Death Star did have a fatal flaw, the small exhaust port which was not particle-shielded.

*Palpatine was so over-confident and evil that he virtually doomed his Empire.

These are just some weaknesses of the Empire. I will list weaknesses of the Federation soon.
